Fake Requests - Are Other Long Time Sitter Getting Allot of These Too?

I seem to be getting ALLOT of Fake Requests:

Rover mentions they cannot do anything and the playing field is "level"

  • Profiles with no pictures and no information
  • Requests sent to the name of a completely different Rover Sitter
  • Requests from people who want to drop their dog off that same day, without a Meet and Greet
  • Requests for dogs that clearly do not fit my profile
  • Even requests when I am blocked out of search and I have no idea how they got through
  • Many of these fake profiles do not respond even when I politely suggest a Meet and Greet

Do other sitters seem to get allot of these sorts of requests, especially when on Rover awhile?

Thanks,

Mike

I've been getting what seem like fake requests quite frequently too. I asked Rover about it and they didn't seem to have an answer. I always treat them as a real potential customer, but I never hear back. I've gotten a few where the person asked for care two hours from when their message came thru.

I got a first request tonight for dog daycare at my place-tomorrow, so no time for meet and greet. No care information for the dog or hours needed. Beautiful profile pic of owner looks like a model in a field of flowers, and the dog is gorgeous too, an exotic breed. Owner lives in another county.

I don't know if they're fake. But hv been with Rover 4 yrs. I hv always been fully booked for Thanksgiving & Xmas. Had 1 dog, repeat, for TG & 1 wk out for Xmas hv 0 bookings with 2 pending & 1 sneaky cancellation? Had 10+ requests but no bookings. Allot of my sitter bailed & now looking for a place

I feel something is going on? Getting discouraged with going on with Rover. There has to be away to screen these fake requests. Hv sum rules of conduct too for clients.

YES. I had one today that actually called me using their rover generated number and claimed they were rover support. It became obvious they weren't when they starting asking personal questions that rover support would not ask. I told them I would call rover support back, and they hung up right away.

Most of the issues are due to the fale Rover numbers rover uses to prevent you from having clients’ real phone numbers so they can monitor all of your communication. The numbers only work on the one phone client uses to sign up, and only works sometimes bc (duh) the fake number ends up being someone

‘S real number. AND they cross them up bc you start getting another sitter’s requests, and if you answer, the client doesn’t know who you are, etc. In short, those requests are mostly not fake; totally Rover’s crappy site mgmt.

I also have this problem and more often than not it seems to happen everytime my rating hits the mid 90's. I used to think this was a conspiracy of some sorts but in all reality the higher your ranking the more requests you will receive. I also receive requests for dogs that do not fit my profile, owners that have no profile set up for their dog, requests from people who never respond, same day request that do not want to do a meet and greet and request from people in other cities over a hundred miles away, I believe this is what is happening.

People see an ad or hear about rover one way or another. They log on with no real intention of booking but more just to see what it is all about and send a non-malice request just "checking things out" or a last-minute request looking for a sitter immediately. They have no idea how Rover works or that we, the sitters, are independent contractors. They don't understand we ranked and our rankings are important to our business and affect by these "fake" requests. I have had people tell me they thought we know every other rover sitter and somehow all work together. The fact that Rover encourages owners to send multiple requests at the same time only ensures a booking for that client which generates revenue for Rover may be frustrating to the sitter but should not come as a surprise to anyone. Yes, I agree this seems very one-sided as this request will most likely not get booked with me and negatively affect my rating.

I have emailed Rover support multiple times with concerns regarding this and other similar situations. They always seem reply in a very politically correct way of skirting around my request to implement more options for archiving requests or anything that allows the sitters more control or options to enhance our ability to control our rating and bookings.

Ultimately I do not think these are fake requests, just owners with little understanding of how the app/website works. Rover is not interested in adding fail-safes to the platform that protects the sitters. Rover's priority is attracting new clients and retaining the ones they already have. If Rover is going to upgrade anything it will be on the owner's side to make the system more user-friendly for them, the "Customer". But let's be honest why wouldn't they? This is their website and they allow us to make money through it. If we, the sitters, don't like it we don't have to be Rover sitters. Rover doesn't care if you book the request or if I do because at the end of the day they still make their money as the customer ultimately books with one of the multiple sitters available on Rover. The only loser in this scenario is the sitter that doesn't book the request. Is this frustrating? YES ... (more)

What you mention is fairly common, but don't chalk it all up to fake requests. New owners are promoted to send booking requests to several sitters during the initial booking request. This adds to confusion for the owner and also to the sitters. When the owner selects multiple sitters they don't review the perspective sitter profile, so you get a request that doesn't fit you. Odd are pretty great you will be ghosted by the owner. Many new to Rover owners don't complete the profile for multiple pets as they don't intuitively see how to do it. There does seem to be an uptick in last minute requests reported by many sitters, I see this all the time on our Rover Facebook group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/Rover...

I just got my first one. The owner wanted me to walk her dog but needed it immediately. I say okay because it’s just a walk. But when I show up she says she doesn’t see me. She was even describing the exact place I was in front of. So she get frustrated after not seeing me and gives up. But the next day she requested me again. I asked if she stayed somewhere different from yesterday I asked why, she says she doesn’t like scammers. I was confused but still tried to help her. I get to the new address then call. She starts saying she doesn’t have a dog and to stop calling her with all my nonsense. (Same voice from yesterday)

But after the phone call she says that it was her on the phone just now and she was testing me again to make sure I’m real. Then finds my personal number and starts asking for more services. I quickly reported her.

Wtf. I'm sorry that happened to you. That's absurd.

This is so weird, I just had this weird request come through today for a dog in NJ. I'm in GA. The client asked to book tomorrow of all things. She had two messages, one where she is asking to book and another that just says Yes like she's responding to someone else as I had not responded to her yet.

I did decline the request because it was outside of my service area and told the client I prefer to do a meet and greet and cannot accept her boarding request as there is no time to do that before tomorrow. Not sure if this is a fake request per se or maybe she's from NJ and visiting locally, but it was strange.

The “yes” response could have been to the automated text that rover send them that starts and let’s them know about the texting feature. I’ve found that many owners think it’s something they need to respond to “to opt in” instead of realising it’s just an automatic service.

I personally have had another Rover sitter request a booking for $100 a month to take care of their dog all day until 10 pm. Of course, I would decline the offer, I was a little upset especially because they were a Rover Sitter and a$100 to take care of a dog every single day and all day was way below my pricing. I have also had fake accounts contact me. I started to call the phone numbers and to my surprise when the person answers they are upset because their phone numbers are being used on Rover when they never signed up. So sometimes there are real scams out there. I do wish the booking score was updated because sometimes owners request a service I do not offer and it affects my score.

That's really not fair when we get requests we do not offer.

We are receiving so many fake requests. We've been on Rover for a year and we're shocked. Why is this happening? What is their motive?

This happens to me frequently. I always treat them as if they are a legitimate client request. Because... sometimes they are! I've had new client requests come in that sound SUPER sketchy, but they turn out to be great people and amazing clients (they just don't come across well in writing). Aside from that, the Rover "spam" is super annoying. It seems to come in waves. I wish there was a better way of filtering it, but I think that's almost impossible to do. Once it's evident that it's spam, I decline the request and report them to Rover.
