Has anyone put in a fence for their business and claimed it on their taxes?

I have two dogs of my own which I tether in the yard but adding more to the mix is a lot of back and forth and a fenced yard would be much easier. Just wondering if anyone has claimed anything like this and what sort of documentation you used? I also don't want it to seem like a personal expense passed off as business - is there anything I need to prove that I am claiming it for my Rover business?

I would recommend you consult a CPA or other tax expert for tax related questions.

On a personal note though, I installed a new fence last year and claimed it on my taxes as a Rover expense. I can't speak to what kind of 'proof' you'd need if you get audited, but I imagine it would be the same kind of proof you'd have to provide when claiming dog treats, cleaning supplies, etc. as a deduction. Keep thorough records, receipts and take photos.

Hi I am an accountant! I don't see a problem claiming fencing, as long as you can prove that its a necessary expense for your business. I understand, as a sitter, that it can be necessary. However if you were to get audited, the IRS can be funny about stuff like that. So just be prepared and able to prove it's necessity. When I move, I'm planning on getting temporary fencing (dog play pens) for the same reason. Just keep receipts, estimates and such for tax purposes!

Hope that helps!

Hi accountant! We run a Rover business out of our house and have to replace the old chain link fence with a larger privacy fence to help reduce the chance of dogs trying to escape. When I put the fencing materials and labor into Quickbooks, how should I properly classify the expense?
