When filling out the W-9 form, what kind of Independent contractor should I choose?

I'm new to http://Rover.com and have never filled out a W-9 form before. Even after reading http://IRS.gov, I'm not sure how to decide what kind of independent contractor I am. Do I need to apply for a business license just to dog sit when I haven't needed it before?

• If you’ve been paid out over $600 via check over the course of a calendar year, Rover will request a W-9 and will send you a 1099 tax form.

• If you’ve received $20,000 or more in payments via PayPal, then PayPal will contact you directly with details about your W-9 and 1099 forms.

• If you’ve received less than $600 via check or $20,000 via PayPal, you won’t receive a 1099 form from Rover or PayPal or be asked to submit a W-9.

As an IC you have to keep good records so you can accurately report your income.

Whether you need a business license or not is determined by your local government so you must contact them

Thank you, but that doesn't really anwser the main question.

More than likely Individual/sole proprietor or single-member LLC

Thank you, Walt !!! :-D

Hi There! You don't necessarily need to fill out a W-9 unless you meet the requirements that Walt mentioned. You would technically be a sole proprietor, which would go on schedule C of your taxes.

No, you don't need a business license just for pet sitting. Unless you grow it into a larger "business" or its required in your area for some reason.

Hope that helped!
