What is your experience sitting for Alaskan malamutes?

I have a meet and greet this weekend with an Alaskan malamute. I have been around a lot of different breeds, but not the malamute! I do believe there's a first for everything. However...

I have always heard nothing but negative things about this breed, especially being a very aggressive dog, and hating to socialize with other dogs of the same sex. I would hate to be home alone if it suddenly decides to attack, ha.

So, do you think I should error on the side of caution and not watch this dog?

Just curious- How did the m&g go? Did you take the pup?

It would depend on the age, training, social and temperment of the dog. They are very similar to the Husky and still used as sled dogs. Do the M&G and ask a Lot of questions. Due to their breeding you want to be very careful if you will also have small pets (dogs, cats, etc) as they can be "prey" oriented. So ask about the pups' social skills, any issues, etc. They do shed so grooming (brushing) should be done daily - outside is best. They do need to be exercised daily. In my opinion, I put them in the German Shepard, Husky, Spitz, Chow category. Some can be very sweet, loving, playful, great with people & children and one of your best customers to sit. I have heard bad things about Chows but I watch the sweetest Chow and a very sweet German Shepard. If any "red flags" come up - like the owner kind of brushes off a question about how the pup gets along with small animals, any aggression, etc. know that you shouldn't have any small pets, will want to chase cats and other small animals when being walked so know your own physical strength. Hopefully it will turn out to be a Great experience.

We had one growing up as a family pet. He was the sweetest, most kind and gentle dog. He let us do all kinds of things to him (dress up, extra man in games such as duck-duck goose, etc). He was also super smart. He made a great tv pillow, friend and protector.
Every dog is different. Look at the family, not so much the breed.
There is a very large Malamute at the dogpark that I frequent with my little dog. For some reason, my pup has a strong dislike for Huskies and Malamutes. The Malamute at the park also happens to be super submissive, so my dog barks and gives chase and the Malamute runs, hides behind his owner and eventually rolls over onto his back. There is another Malamute at the dogpark and he is a total jerk and is quite aggressive. I keep my little guy away from him. That's the neat thing about the M&G, you never know what you're going to find. Just go in with an open mind. :)
