What to do when you find cameras in a clients house? [closed]

What are you thoughts and feelings about cameras in the clients home? I meet with the clients for the meet and greet and everything went fine. I even came back to the house a week before the actual stay to review everything and pick up a key. Never once did they mention nor were there cameras in her house either time. When I arrived to watch the clients dogs I noticed that there was a camera in the front room and another one in the kitchen area. I personally don't really know how to handle the situation. I feel that my privacy is being invaded. They are very nice clients and their dogs are wonderful but I feel had they not trusted me in their home to watch their dogs I would of rather they just didn't book with me. ( not sure if makes a difference but they were referred to me through their neighbor. I watch the neighbors two dogs who happens to live directly across the street from this house.) I would love to know if I am just over reacting or if you would feel the same way? How would you handle the situation? =s

I also am bothered by this and feel that clients not disclosing hidden cameras to sitters ahead of time is a huge violation of privacy. In fact, I wrote to Rover suggesting that pet owners be required to disclose to their sitters the presence of any cameras in the home, but I haven't heard back.

Just like pet owners need to feel safe about a sitter in their home, sitters should feel safe in the homes of their clients. Sitters on Rover are vetted thoroughly (background checks, testimonials / reviews, badges, etc.) but as far as I can tell, pet owners aren't vetted at all, and def should be.

I disagree about the violation of privacy, yes you are in a private space but you are also at work. If I was a client and had a sitter refuse the job because of a webcam or a nanny cam - or even if they brought it up in the m&g - I would have serious concerns and wouldn't book with them.

I actually prefer they have cameras, cause that covers my butt as well as theirs. I’ve had clients accuse me of theft when I haven’t stolen anything. But if they don’t tell me they have a camera, I make like they do. I won’t do anything I wouldn’t do if a camera was there. I don’t care

Here’s my concern. Im both a pet sitter and when I go on vacation, I’m the client. I always inform that I have one camera, just in the living room. The fact that I disclose it means I’m not invading anyone’s privacy and at the same time I have peace of mind, god forbid anything happens.

As a pet sitter, I could care less that you have cameras. But, if you aren’t telling me about it and at some point in time I come across cameras in odd places, like a tree, the ground, on a tall tv unit facing down, etc then how do I know there aren’t any in the bedroom I sleep/change

I usually try to ignore it even though I think hidden cameras are super creepy. But I just got back from a pet's house and I'm very creeped out because found cameras in the kitchen and in the bathroom as I was leaving from the stay. Not sure how to handle this.

Ugh, I found a hidden camera in the bathroom of the client I am sitting for. This really creeps me out.

I'm having this issue right now. I didn't anticipate cameras prior to the stay. And I'm ok with them typically. Usually they are disclosed ahead of time and people are pretty nice about ensuring that I have some areas of privacy. But I'm expected to sleep on their couch and the camera is facing right towards the couch. I am NOT ok with being watched while I sleep. I don't need people hearing me when I talk in my sleep or seeing me drool on my pillow. And I'm definitely not comfortable with the fact that they could even take that footage and put it on the internet. I don't know them any more than they know me. How am I supposed to know if they'd do something like that? They just left town this morning and I'm supposed to spend 3 nights.

Turn the camera around to face the wall when you go to bed, put a wash cloth over it, or unplug the unit.

Thanks! I contacted the owner and explained I wasn't comfortable with it while I slept and asked if I could turn or cover it. They said I could cover it. 😄 Still don't think I'll be back. That couch is not at all comfortable. But thankfully they were reasonable!

I always ask as part of the M&G for a house sitting or drop in visit whether the clients have cameras. I couch in terms of "I wouldn't want to embarrass you or me." If I later find that they lied, I still do the stay. I always assume nowadays that there are cameras, at least at the front and back doors, and I act accordingly. I don't think their presence indicates that the owners don't trust us, it's more for security and/or to get evidence if there's a breakin. I don't have a problem with there being cameras. I consider it protection for us too in case something happens to us.

I always think there's a camera on me at every visit.

I agree. I just always assume I'm being watched!

agreed. I always think it and act as if they are watching.

I have no problems with people using a hidden cam. I treat all my clients' places like if they had a hidden cam. I only do my work, what I am supposed to do, do not get in their personal belongings etc. I understand they need to feel safe with a person coming to their home.

We have cameras in our house, but it’s not that we don’t trust the people who come in (our cleaner or sitter when I’m gone) but I want to be able to check on my dogs.

I think sometimes we assume it’s to watch us when it’s to actually watch their dogs.

You may want to read this similar question asked about cameras in the past: https://www.rover.com/community/quest...

While it would be nice if they mentioned them, I'd suggest not taking it personally. Since they booked you, they have some level of trust. However, maids, other contractors, neighbors, friends, and other family members could also have access to their house. With the camera, it can help reduce or prevent questions about who did what and when. Also, the pet parents can see how much attention, affection, and play the dogs benefit from while away. As long as I do not find cameras in the bathroom or bedroom (if staying over), I don't have any issues with privacy.

I think my fear with hidden nanny cams is that you won't be able to find them if they're hidden in the bedroom or bathroom. I guess that's a risk we have to take staying the night in a near strangers home :(

I don't actively look for cameras in a clients house aside from the bathroom and bedroom, same as with hotels and public facilities

I have always been OK and polite about cameras, and of course assume there are cameras. I read this thread when I started on Rover (and the other thread).

Now I'm at an appointment where not only has the client made me aware there are cameras — they're being BLATANT that they're watching them. Nearly all day. And not only commenting on their animals or their house in relation to my activities — they're commenting about what I'm doing, my personal comfort, etc.

It's invasive and disturbing. I've got other repeat clients with cameras. They say nothing to me about what I'm doing or how I care for their animals, even though that latter would be OK so long as it's not a micromanaging text conversation all day that includes comments that have nothing to do with the purpose of my stay.

Very upset.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about the level of surveillance you are under. All you can do is never book with these people again. There was another thread with the same type of situation, where the clients kept calling when they saw something they didn't like.

Thanks, I read that too. I thanked the client, said I'm an adult and can regulate my own comfort. It's important to draw a firm boundary & keep taking great care of the dogs. If we get nicked in ratings for not liking being watched over like this, we'll comment on the rating about what happened.

I called Rover support and left a note in the file for a paper trail at least. :/
