Hiking with your dog in Regina can be a brilliant way to relax and unwind. Whilst Regina is a commercial hub and bustling city, it also has some beautiful parks that make it the perfect place for a hike with your dog.
Take a look at our top picks of the best dog hikes in Regina, to keep you and your dog occupied over the warmer summer months and into the fall.
1. Douglas Provincial Park – Dunes Nature Centre Trail
Located north west of Regina
This dog friendly route is second to none, due to the view of the sand dunes in Douglas Provincial Park that are pretty spectacular. The Park can be found on the shores of Lake Diefenbaker. It’s 6.5km, so expect to still get a little workout, but the route is relatively easy for those who are new to hiking with their dog.
The beautiful Lake Diefenbaker sets the backdrop for this amazing walk, and brings you to the lakeshore which offers plenty of areas to explore. Plus, if you want to try some water activities or camp there are loads of options for you in this park. If you’re looking to make it a camping trip, then Rover can always pair you with a wonderful dog sitter to look after your pet whilst you soak up the surroundings.
2. Buffalo Pound Provincial Park
Located north west of Regina
At 86km outside Regina, this hike is best suited to those who like to spend the weekend getting away and immersing themselves in nature. There’s a wonderful variety of trails for hikers of all ages, however it’s worth bearing in mind that the full park hike is over 30km long.
It’s dog friendly (yipee!) but if you have an older dog, or a less active breed, then it may be better to take on a smaller route to start with. If you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to seeing the corral of buffalos that live amongst the rolling hills so keep your eyes peeled!
3. Wascana Trails
Located north west of Regina
With 15km of trails to be enjoyed all year round, these dog-friendly trails are a real treat for dog owners. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings with your pup and see some stunning views of the valley.
There are a few sneaky inclines to watch out for, as the trail is located on the Qu’Appelle Valley. Whilst the inclines may have you out of breath for a short moment, the view makes the climb so worth it. Our dog hiking advice would be to keep your pet on a leash for this hike as there are deer along the trail.
4. Cranberry Flats Conservation Area
Located near Saskatoon, north west of Regina
This conservation area is a rare gem located just outside the City of Saskatoon and offers any city-dwellers the chance to escape into nature for a short hike.
It’s only 3.2km, which makes it the ideal length for those with children whose legs get tired quickly. Get ready to see some amazing scenery, with beautiful rolling green hills and a river that runs throughout. You can also be your own tour guide with the handy signs that guide you along the banks of the river and explain the route.
5. White Butte Trails
Located 30 minutes east of downtown Regina
If you’re looking for a short walk that will wind you through gorgeous, rich forests then this is the one for you. Your dog will love the natural landscape, and will be able to enjoy this route all year round (if they like the snow, that is!)
It’s 5km, and offers a designated path for walkers and pets that’s separate from the ski trails. However, as you walk along you are likely to catch a glimpse of some of the skiers who use the park in the winter and the cyclists who use it in the summer.
Whether you’re tackling a full on 30km hike, or taking more of a leisurely stroll through the forest, we hope you enjoy the trails that Regina has to offer. If you want to take a breather and camp at one of these parks for the weekend, our Dog Boarders can take your pup off your hands whilst you escape to the country!
