You’ve probably heard the hype about dogs not liking hugs, thanks to recent articles about research that claims that dogs hate being hugged by humans.

However, the study wasn’t peer-reviewed, and experts question it. Yes, many dogs would prefer not to be squeezed, but others actively seek out hugs.

How can I tell if my dog likes hugs?

If your dog frequently climbs or leans on you, or begs to be “up” in your arms, chances are, he’s fine with a hug. Look for signs of stress, such as licking lips or yawning, whale eye, and tension in the ears or mouth. If your dog is giving you a “no thank you” message, you should absolutely respect his space.

For more insight into your dog’s thoughts and feelings, start with Dr. Stanley Coren’s indispensable How Dogs Think on dog psychology and Dr. Patricia McConnell’s For the Love of a Dog about dog emotions.
