commented answer Any suggestions on helping our smallest dog not growl and snarl at other dogs?

To clarify, yes, you are the leader for your dog and they will look to you as to what is appropriate behavior or not. It is your responsibility to promote a calm and submissive state for your pet. Some dogs certainly do need to be redirected to submit if their behavior becomes too aggressive.

answered a question Keeping a full house calm?

For sure if you can provide secluded safe spaces for your pups, that would be great for the holidays. At the same time, if you always do this during gatherings, you dog can develop too much anxiety to come out and meet anyone new who is there. Also beware of small children as they are not equipped with the skills to properly handle dogs.

answered a question How do I get my dog to stop digging in the yard?

Adding an approved digging place is a great way to support breeds who are prone to this behavior and who love to dig. Training to use a sandbox for this activity would be great with dogs!

answered a question are there any natural home remedies for a dog that scratches excessively?

You may have one of those breeds that, yes, can and will be destructive if you are gone. Separation anxiety. Boredom. All good reasons to scratch. Certain breeds need a lot of stimulus to keep them occupied otherwise they may turn to these behaviors. Toys. Food. Leaving music or tv on can certainly help. Also, if you can keep your dog in a space where they will not see you leave; that can keep them calmer.

answered a question What are your tips for dealing with leash aggressive dogs?

Agree with above and treats can be a great motivator to break his focus from other dogs.

While it is not my go-to method, I have seen some luck with using portable water squirters in order to break the dogs fixation on other dogs.

answered a question Any suggestions on helping our smallest dog not growl and snarl at other dogs?

True; small breeds can develop some social issues as they try to counter their own anxiety and nervousness. Not easy being small. It will take a lot of confidence on your part to redirect and force the dog to submit. If need be, you can force the dog to physically submit by laying on its side during problem behaviors. And agree that picking up your dog is the last thing you should do. This reinforces that they will be safe and something will happen if they continue the behavior.

answered a question What is a good way to get my dog to let me brush his teeth?

If possible, it is great to begin this task during puppy training so your dog will become accustomed! And yes, using food in the process (as long as your dog is not over-zealous about food) is great to use during brushing).

answered a question Why is my dog's breath so bad?

Just like us, dogs will have bad breath due to bacteria. It's normal. There are some really nice water additives that do a great job to eliminate this.

While most bad breath is normal, in rare occasions, this can be a sign of internal / organ failure or disease. If you have ever owned older pets who begin to die, you will remember the smell because it is very recognizable. Vets usually know immediately if an older pet has begun organ failure due to the characteristics of the smell.

answered a question What is a dog face book page that i'm seeing?

Yes, Facebook did indeed come out with a "Dog Book" where you could create a special page for your pet(s) that will be attached to your page. I'm not sure if they continued that or discontinued.

answered a question How do you get a dog to stop barking at other dogs outside the car?

Be careful as well to keep up with your training inside cars for dogs. My sister failed to do this and her dog is too aggressive if anyone approaches the car. Yikes.

answered a question What to do if I can feel stitches under my dogs skin that haven't dissolved?

As long as your veterinarian used disposable stitches, they have dissolved and you may feel scar tissue bumps. However, I had a dermatologist who "accidentally" left a suture in my for a surgery once! Never hurts to ask!

answered a question How do I find out about dog friendly businesses in my area (Seattle, WA)?

I would simply do a search and see if anything comes up. Is Seattle known to have many places where you can bring your pet. Not a common thing here in Kansas City aside from registered service dogs.

Marie S., M.S.Ed

answered a question When does your rover reel get made?

Yes, 1-7 days. You can call Rover if for some reason it does not get generated. Personally, I don't use the Rover app much to communicate with my clients after we book. I send them texts and photos directly. Most tend to prefer that.

Marie S., M.S.Ed

answered a question (1) Do you have any locations in or near Albany New York?

Yes, it's helpful just to do a simple search on Rover for providers in your area. Look at each profile to see if they provide cat services. Good luck!

answered a question My dog won't use the pee pad anymore.

Could you remove the holder to see perhaps if your dog will go back to using? That may help you answer if she is afraid of a new change. If she is, you could maybe consider using invisible tape instead of your holder.

Please note that your Rover bonding and insurance does not authorize any other persons to provide care for your pet guests. In the unlikely event that something may happen to your pet guest or your roomate, you may be held liable. That risk is up to you.

answered a question Siberian Husky Puppy Feeding?

All standardized pet food products will support you with food portion recommendations for size. Orijen has a feeding guide here: https://www.orijen.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Orijen-Feeding-Guides-REV-DEC2013.pdf (https://www.orijen.ca/wp-content/uplo...).

Puppies will have quite a bit of food in the beginning as they grow and have much energy.

You will have to work together with your dog to determine if they will do well as a "grazer" or if they will be fed on routine. With my own personal experience, I have always preferred the routine. Some large breeds will not be able to graze on food as they will simply eat anything that comes there way. Some dogs may adapt well to that.

"Grazing pets" in my experience also tend to have a higher frequency of finicky behaviors when it comes to eating (or not eating) their food. The excitement that comes with routine keeps interest and you can always change up your food and / or snacks periodically.

answered a question Are there any trends towards designer cross breed ownership over the past ten to twenty years?

AKC does publications for breed standards which may include popularity charts similar to this one: http://www.akc.org/content/news/articles/labrador-retriever-is-once-again-americas-most-popular-dog/ (http://www.akc.org/content/news/artic...).

I think with a lot of crossbreeds and mongrels both, you will find that the breeds stay true to the popularity of breed standards as well.

Hello there,

This is a large-scale forum where individuals are asking questions from across the United States. It may be best to use Rover to do a local search from providers around your area and to specifically ask individuals if they have experience with your breed and challenges. Thank you,

answered a question Why does my dog bite the air?

There are neurological symptoms in which a dog will exhibit behaviors where they are biting the air or attempting to bite at an object that is not there. There are also studies which suggest this behavior may have underlying causes of a gastrointestinal problem.

I would actually have your pet evaluated for eyesight, GI and neurological issues that may exist.

Marie S., M.S.Ed

answered a question Why does my dog have hiccups?

The most common cause of hiccups, as with humans, is your dog has ate their food too fast and has swallowed a lot of air along with his or her food. There are many food bowls available in stores and online that help to slow eating (particularly with larger breed dogs). You may consider that if you have a breed or dog who will be prone to fast eating.

Thank you for your question!

Marie S., M.S.Ed

answered a question Why does my dog cry when I leave?

For certain, your pet can have anxiety when you leave, which can result in crying, barking or destructive behaviors.

Some options for redirecting this behavior include to provide other stimulus like toys, treats, food, even music, tv or background noise can support.

In addition, if you place your dog in an area where your exit and entry-way is not noticeable to your pet, that can be very helpful! It's better they not see you leave and be content with other things.

Good question for sure,

Marie S., M.S.Ed
