commented answer Special Needs Dog with Lack of Materials

Spoke with Rover and they said it's not necessarily abuse or anything like that, but I don't know about that. I guess I really dont know the closet conditions like if there is a baby gate or anything. Still though, hearing they are in a closet is a little strange to me, regardless of how good it is.

commented answer Special Needs Dog with Lack of Materials

Hey Frances. Thanks for the info. I usually have a crate, but needed to give it back to the rescue. The client gave a tandem leash & the smaller dog (allergies) is being dragged everywhere. I just found out that her "crate" is her closet. She locks the dogs in a closet! I would think thats cruelty

asked a question Special Needs Dog with Lack of Materials

I've sat many dogs in my short time as a sitter, but I am currently sitting two dachshund's who seem to be having difficulty adjusting to the new environment. One is a special needs dog with many many allergies. The other is perfectly okay. The client dropped them off last night for a stay of 4 nights, but did not bring anything to help their transition be smooth. No beds, crate, toys, treats or anything that would give them a sense of comfort. I have contacted the client and the way she replied showed signs of her not understanding what I had told her. She thought it was an issue with my dog, and it has nothing to do with that. They are constantly whining, marking my dogs bed and pooping when I leave. All of which is normal, but again, I have no means to help them cope with this being the client didn't leave anything and the one dog has major allergies.

I guess I am just looking for some feedback on how to go about making them comfortable given the situation. Any contact with her seems to be a dead end.

Thanks!

answered a question Are you supposed to tip the dog sitter when you pick your dogs up

I've gotten quite a few tips for allowing the client to feel comfortable and not rushed for coming by the expected pick up time or even extending last minute. Even being available within an hours notice. It's very much appreciated, but definitely not expected, especially in LA! The last tip, I declined and ran away haha because she was a repeat and I appreciate the amount of business she gives me.

answered a question What is the best dog shampoo?

I've been using EarthBath all natural oatmeal and aloe shampoo and conditioner. So far, I haven't had any problems and I like the scent a lot. The oatmeal and aloe are recommended by veterinarians to effectively combat skin irritation, promote healing, and re-moisturize dry skin. Also, EarthBath is 100% bio-degradable and cruelty free, soap free, gentle and effective (as per the description). There is about 10 varieties and cost ranges from about $12-$25. Hope this helps :)

answered a question Price negotiation

I had someone request a 34 day stay, then started negotiating. They wanted $300 off! I'm all for doing the right thing, but I felt that was a lot, plus the 15% cut to Rover. I was on the fence about it the whole time because that's a long stay, but she was very flaky and wound up not booking. I see a lot of people on here trying to sell themselves short to get the business, but as someone mentioned, Rover's 15% can hurt your low cost. We need to value our time otherwise the customers won't. My suggestion is no different than what others are staying. Keep your price firm and people will respect that as long as you provide proper care for their pups and make them feel comfortable :)

answered a question Does anyone make their own dog food?

I started with this company called JustFoodForDogs (http://www.justfoodfordogs.com) here in LA. I chose the DIY option and you get three pouches (1 pouch yields about 10 lbs of food) that make the meal balanced. Each set of pouches is specific to the recipe you choose. They have lamb, chicken, fish, beef, turkey and I think a vegetarian as well. All human grade ingredients, which they love. Depending on the size of your dog, it can be costly, but it's fresh and you know exactly what's in it. Hope this helps :)
