Hi Tara -

That's really a personal choice. If you feel the care your sitter provided was exceptional (or maybe that your dog is a handful) then a tip is very much appreciated. Really, any tip would be appreciated, but from my experience (and the experiences of other sitters I've talked to around the country), tipping for sitters is more the exception than the rule. I've received one tip in the past year of part time sitting, and it was a nice, unexpected bonus. Personally, I never expect a tip, and I price my services according to what I (and the local market) deem to be fair compensation for the work that I do. But that's one sitter's opinion! There was a thread on this topic a while back, and while the consensus seemed to be similar (ie, it's nice and appreciated, but not required or expected), it's good to hear more opinions straight from the source: https://www.rover.com/community/quest...

If you're unsure about tipping but still want to do something for your sitter, I totally recommend bringing back a little souvenir from your vacation. One of our clients brought back candy from Singapore, and that was great! They also brought us doughnuts once. Inexpensive, but thoughtful and sweet.

I don't ever expect a tip but in my area, tipping is customary. I am tipped all the time, maybe except for once. If it's not in the form of money, it is a souvenir from their trip. One person bought me a bottle of red wine and home baked cookies. I thought that was awesome.

I've gotten quite a few tips for allowing the client to feel comfortable and not rushed for coming by the expected pick up time or even extending last minute. Even being available within an hours notice. It's very much appreciated, but definitely not expected, especially in LA! The last tip, I declined and ran away haha because she was a repeat and I appreciate the amount of business she gives me.

Sitters, Im very surprised at how short you are all sellling yourselves.

Yes, you should tip your sitter! This is no different then any other service based profession such as Hair Stylist, Manicurist, Groomer, Newscarrier, Car Valet, or Waiter/Waitress. A typical tip would be 15-20% for gratitude. A tip shows respect and appreciation for their trustworthy and professional efforts. I keep my rates low to show how I value my customers but this is my only source of income so anything extra is MUCH APPRECIATED. Thank you to all of my current and future clients! HAPPY TAILS!
