answered a question Why does my dog eat crayons?

Dogs are like humans in that they get exposed to different foods and flavors and eventually take a liking to certain foods moreso than others, possibly crayons. If your dog eats crayons, it is extremely important to check the label of the crayon and make sure it's non-toxic. If the crayon is toxic for whatever reason, I would highly recommend taking your dog to the vet. If the crayon is non-toxic, like Crayola crayons, it problem isn't going to harm your dog. Even though crayons don't pose a serious threat to your dog if they're consumed, I would try to eliminate the crayon-eating and encourage the dog to eat food specific for dogs or even provide the dog with treats that meet the nutritional requirements they need.

answered a question Why does my dog dig at the floor?

Dogs dig at the floor for various reasons. A dog can dig at the floor because the dog is attempting to dig a hole due to his/her instinctive behavior. Dogs also scratch and dig at the floor before they lie down to make a softer resting place for themselves. It's also possible the dog is digging at the floor as a means of entertainment.

answered a question How to stop my dog from barking at other dogs?

There's several options to get your dog to stop barking: invest in a bark collar that buzzes or shocks the dog every time it barks, de-vocalize the dog through surgery (which can be extreme option for many dog owners), but if you have the time and patience I would recommend training the dog to stop barking yourself. To correct the dog problem behavior, you should communicate to your dog to stop barking with a sound, look, or even a physical correction like a yank on the leash when he/she encounters another dog on a walk. Often times, the dog understood the correction because he/she will pause, but will then go back to barking. It is important to make sure your dog stops barking completely before you reward the dog with a treat. That way, he/she fully understands that the treat will only be given when he/she has stopped barking.

answered a question Why does my dog grunt like a pig?

Some dog breeds are more likely to grunt and snort like pigs than others. For example, Bulldogs, Boxers, Mastiffs, Pugs, Shit Zhus, and other dog breeds with short snouts. I've also heard that the snorting can be a backwards sneeze, which is the dog trying to get an allergen out of its system. It can also be a behavior due to the excessive amount of energy the dog is exerting, so it's a common behavior that you shouldn't be worried about. However, if snorting is an irregular behavior for your dog, it might be because of weight problems.

answered a question How can I help my dog lose weight?

If your dog is overweight, you can always make a trip to the veterinarian to come up with a specific weight loss plan to get your dog back to its ideal weight. Other alternatives would be to feed the dog a specialized diet for weight loss by changing his/her type of dog food, measure out your dog's food for each meal, exercise your dog more often by going on walks or runs frequently, reduce or get rid of unhealthy treats in your dog's diet, and monitor and adjust your dog's weight loss plan accordingly.

answered a question Why does my dog howl at sirens?

Dogs are much more sensitive to higher frequencies than humans so they tend to howl at the sound of sirens because it hurts their ears. There's also the theory that dogs howl at sirens because they believe it's a pack of dogs communicating with them from a distance, so they feel the need to respond back.

answered a question Why does my dog eat cat food?

Unfortunately, dogs will eat almost anything when given the opportunity. Cat food is not in particular harmful for dogs, but cats and dogs have different nutritional requirements so it would be best to keep your dog from eating cat food despite how much he/she likes it. Larger dogs, especially, require a much higher food intake than cats so cat food alone is not going to suffice. To prevent the dog from eating cat food, I would recommend not "free-feeding" the cat. That way, the cat's food is not accessible to the dog. Another suggestion is to also place the cat food in an area that the dog cannot reach or even in a separate room of your house.

answered a question Why does my dog choke after drinking water?

If your dog chokes after drinking water, it's usually because the dog is drinking too fast. This is often times the case when dogs are overly excited after playing and go to drink water. It's nothing too serious. It's similar to when we drink water and gag on it because it goes down the wrong pipe. I would recommend to keep the dog as calm as possible before he/she heads for the water bowl and control your dog's water intake to make sure he/she doesn't drink too much at once. You definitely want to keep an eye on the behavior though because the issue could be more serious if your dog is constantly coughing after he/she drinks water.

answered a question Why my dog obsessively licks other dog's mouths?

Dogs licking each others' lips is actually a completely normal behavior. It's sometimes a sign of affection or a sign the dog is ready to play, but more than anything it's a behavior that comes from early puppy-hood when puppies would lick their mother's mouth to encourage the mother to regurgitate food for them. You mentioned the safety of your dog being your concern. If you notice that your pup is repeatedly licking another dog, I'd recommend to just pay close attention to the dog being licked. If the other dog is trying to move away, you may want to intervene.

answered a question Why does my dog get hiccups?

Dog hiccups are typically harmless. They're usually caused by excitement, eating too fast, irritants, or stress. Puppies, especially, are prone to hiccups because they tend to gulp in an excessive amount of air as they're inhaling their food or drinking their water. Hiccups shouldn't be too much of a concern since it actually helps dogs relieve gas in their stomachs.

answered a question Why does my dog sleep all day?

Dogs are very much like humans, they need a lot of sleep. In fact, they tend to get more sleep than we do. How much sleep also depends on their activity level and the amount of sleep they get can also be due to their breed. Large breed dogs like mastiffs tend to sleep up to 18 hours a day.

answered a question Why does my dog eat a lot of grass?

For whatever reason, dogs love to munch on grass. Dogs eat grass for the same reason humans eat vegetables, for it's nutritional, natural value. There's also a theory that dogs eat grass as a medicinal remedy to help them vomit when they have an upset stomach or aren't feeling well. There really is no harm in letting your dog eat grass.

answered a question Why does my dog have a dry nose?

Dog noses are typically wet because of their tear glands, so when your dog has a dry nose it often times indicates that there's an underlying issue such as allergies or it's possibly irritated. The notion that when a dog's nose is dry is an indication that the dog is sick is false. There's also other factors to take into consideration that might be the cause of it too: the nose naturally gets dry during sleep, your dog might be too close to a heat source, the dog is dehydrated, or the dog has a sunburn.
