For home stays, how to I handle food the the sitter I hire? Do I leave them $, a fixed amount per day?

Food for house sitters.

Excuse me Barbara but are you talking about food for the sitter or food for the dog? If it's food for the dog then leave whatever remaining food you have left and the sitter can pick some up for you and bring a receipt so you can pay them back. If it's about what the sitters eat then I am unsure

Through my experience being a in-home sitter, it's rare that an owner leaves money for food, although it's greatly appreciated when it happens. I often have people say 'help yourself to any food in the cabinets' but most of the time I bring my own, or go grocery shopping near the home. Do whatever you feel is right!

Thanks Amber. A few years ago we left $100 for any dog related items needed and any food not already in our house and not brought with the sitter. On our return $0 was left.with nothing spent on our dogs. I did confront her. This time (new sitter) I'm going to ask for an accounting. Thanks again

Hope you have a much better experience! Very rarely owners leave $ for food etc. When I've needed something for dogs, I pay & they reimburse me later (I provide receipt), Or they've ordered online & had shipped. When they gave$, I've returned all$, as zero was needed 4 the dogs. Clients chose 2 tip.

Barbara, I'm SO sorry you had that experience w/ a previous sitter! Your consideration was certainly taken advantage of in that situation, but I hope you know that her decision to keep the $ is not a reflection on other sitters on Rover :) So many of us have proven our integrity & trustworthiness :)

This is definitely an area you want to discuss with your sitter prior to the stay. As an occasional house sitter, I have always brought my own food and drinks, and the owner has shown me where the pots, pans, dishes, etc. are located so I can use them. If it's a longer stay, I will go grocery shopping on my own. I do not expect the owner to pay for my food, but it they choose to do so it's a nice perk.

As far as food for the pets, be sure to leave enough to cover the visit. Discuss with the sitter how to handle it if they run out. Either leave them money and the name of the store or have them pay for it and you reimburse them upon your return. In any case, as a sitter, I would be expected to provide a receipt for any purchases I made.
