How many German Shepherds do I need, and breeding questions?

I am part of an organization that is about to purchase a plot of over 40 acres of land. We are looking to buy some German Shepherds to guard the area, but I wanted to know how many would be necessary. Please note that I am not buying these dogs on a whim, I have owned Shepherds for decades, but only for regular residential sized spaces. There will be caretakers for these dogs at all times, so that is not an issue. I am guessing we will need at least 2-3 dogs, but if someone could give me a more accurate estimate, that would be great. My second question is, what would be the best way to buy the puppies? I was considering buying a male and a female from a breeder and breeding them, but I know that this is sometimes prohibited by the breeder and is a touchy subject in the dog-community. Additionally, I could also adopt some from the shelter- and possibly breed them, or just buy many at once. Please let me know how I should approach this problem. Thank you in advance!

It would be better to rescue the dogs you need instead of breeding any. It is important that only the highest quality dogs are bred together, and by people who have a vast amount of experience.

Thank you for your input, Shannon. I too, am leaning towards rescue puppies. Do you have any knowledge on how many dogs would be necessary?

You're welcome. No, sorry, I don't know how many you'll need, I've never used dogs for guarding a large property.

You probably wouldn't be able to breed rescue puppies. Even breed-specific rescue organizations typically spay/neuter adult dogs. For puppies, they often require you to sign a binding agreement (with a refundable deposit) to have the dog spayed and or neutered by a certain date.

Please do not buy from a breeder. There are too many dogs abandon and killed in shelters. There is a German Shepherd rescue in Orange, CA and others all over the US. You can also use Pet Finder and choose from thousands of dogs perfect for what you need. There are puppies and young adult dogs waiting for a job like yours. Check shelters and rescues. Let me know if I can help you.

40 aces is a big area. It would also depend what they are guarding. Is it just the land or structures too? Two or three dogs is a good idea. It is not a good idea for you to breed any dogs and not necessary. There are wonderful dogs waiting for you. Please reach out if you need referrals.

Thanks so much, Laura
