Are real christmas trees safe for dogs?
I don't think my dog would eat a tree, but if they decided to nibble on it, would it be harmful?

I wouldn't worry about it, might cause GI upset if he does actually eat it.
Similar to the other answers, a Christmas tree shouldn't cause too many problems except the possible want to pee on them (I know from personal experience haha). But you should still be careful, pine needles and stems can cause cornea lacerations. Also if a pup ingests too much of the tree sap it can possibly cause gastrointestinal issues. I would keep an eye out as much as possible and make sure they aren't too curious about it. Also sweep up any loose needles just to be safe :)
A small amount of pine needles shouldn't be an issue (depending on the size of your dog). But I would keep a close eye on your pup and his/her initial reaction to the tree and monitor their behavior for the first hour.
Like sticks outside, if your dog is prone to eat bits of it, it may not be the best idea; but if your dog isn't one to eat sticks, it should be fine. A small amount of chewing shouldn't be a problem (though probably best to discourage that with plenty of other fun things to chew, since you don't want a gnawed on, sideways tree).
