Belly wraps/Bands

I am so glad I am part of this community, you guys always give the best advice. I had a meet and greet yesterday and the owner of the dog said her dog "might" mark. I've had a bad experience before with a heavy marker and I learned my lesson from that time as to not let him roam around the whole house. I told her about the belly band/wraps and she never heard of it. She said she will buy one for his stay but my question to you is this.....how long do you leave the belly band on? Do you leave it on all the time except for potty breaks and walks or is it something you leave on for a few hours? I am not experienced with this. I mean, I wouldn't want it on too long that he will get an infection. Does anyone know the proper usage? Thank you.

Hi Frances,

I once hosted a non-neutered male dog who had quite a few 'accidents' and not in the form of marking (I will let you figure out the outcome - so gross!) but I ended up purchasing a belly band for him.

In regards to the duration, I had the dog wear it the entire time he was inside and it was never a problem, you just want to make sure it's not too tight and not rubbing the skin anywhere. If he does mark with the band on, the band will catch it, and you can even use a panty liner on the inside so you don't have to wash the band constantly.

We currently use a diaper for our Dachshund and I use feminine pads on the inside. They catch the urine and are easy to replace with a new pad. Hope this helps - the band was a lifesaver with my past Rover dog!

Oh boy, yes I can imagine his form of marking. Thanks Amber. I just wasn't sure how long you can leave it on. I wouldn't want the dog to get an infection but as I've been reading, people recommend to change the pad frequently. Thanks again.

I have made potty bands for my older Boxer who has incontinence issues. He wears them all the time and line them with maxipads...and change as necessary. They have helped a ton, especially while he sleeps. Just the slight pressure of having it on helps him hold it.

I'll have to give it a try with our intact guest and see if it minimizes the marking.

We use a pee belt or belly band for our senior dog, we lovingly refer to the band as "wonder shorts" so as not to offend him. The belt has been a big help since our lad started having urinary incontinence, we also use some type of pad since there is no telling how many times he could go at night. I put the belt on him before bed time every night, since the velcro wears off after a time of washings I also secure it with safety pins to make sure it won't fall off while our lad moves around. The pad is always thrown away in the morning and the belt is checked for any sign of wetness. I recommend changing the pad frequently if you are using it all day and definitely use some safety pins if your belt fastens with velcro. I hope this saves you some trouble, take care.

Hi Frances,

I regularly sit a neutered male who still has a marking issue. I use a fleece/fabric belly band (not leakproof!) purchased from Etsy specifically for him. I have lined it with a feminine pad, but I find that using a cloth diaper insert works better and he seems more comfortable. In this doggy's case, just having the belly band on prevents him from even trying, so I don't have to do a ton of laundry. The belly band is a great tool to have in any pet sitter's arsenal. I hope it worked out for you.

Thank you. I actually bought great ones from Ebay. I bought 3 in different sizes. It comes with the pocket to slide in the pad. I am really loving this. Thank goodness there is a solution :)
