Has anyone's dog ever gone missing under rover sitter?

I have never had a dog run away or go missing under my watch. Personally, I have prevented this issue by never leaving any dog outside unattended, with either my boyfriend or myself. I also have small dog tags that I put on visitors with my phone number and "I'm visiting Daniela and Mike!" on them.

I'm sure that it has. Thankfully, it hasn't happened to me, though early on in my business I have had a guest slip out the door once and another slip her collar while on a run. Luckily neither dog had the intention of running off. I've seen a couple posts about dogs getting loose on the forum here; as far as I recall, all events resulted in the dog being found quickly and safely.

It's always a risk, even with the best precautions. Equipment can break, a sitter can be caught off guard, there may even be a situation where dropping a leash is a safer option than not, like during an attack or car accident. And since the guests don't usually have as strong a bond with the sitter as with their owners, if a dog gets loose, it may be more difficult to get them back.

Your best protection is to discuss safety measures with any potential sitters and ask lots of questions about the prevention they use. Do they have gates at the doors? Are they diligent about making sure leashes are attached before opening the door until after the door is closed on return? Are the dogs always attended when outdoors? If they have a yard, is it secure enough for your dog, and if not, how will they deal with those risks? Also give them a heads up on any concerns you have about your dog's behavior. Let them know what he's tried to do (or done) in the past, and what you have done to prevent it. Put any relevant info into and special equipment the care instructions so it's documented through Rover. And finally, make sure all your dog's gear is in good shape and well-fitted before drop off.

Not with me. If the sitter has the protection package, they get tags to put on the "guest" collar so if a dog does get loose the "finder" contacts the number on the tag. Rover provides online training and tips and sends reminders on keeping the "guests" safe/preventing escapes.
