Any sitters with cats?

How do you handle taking on all kinds of dog boarders with your felines?

Do you mandate that all dogs you take get along perfectly well with your cats? Do you tolerate a bit of barking or no? Do you sequester your cats in a special area of your house?

I've only had 5 boarders since I started in late August and none of them have gotten along too well with my indoor-outdoor cats. Some barking, some chasing although nothing severe or blatantly aggressive. My cats mainly brush it off and go outside or where the dog doesn't frequent. It hasn't been too constant and the dog generally drops it when I distract. I have done my best to screen for the dogs that are clearly aggressive towards them (although in this recent case I misjudged; I am keeping them in a two-room closed-off section of my house for this one).

What are your standards for the often fraught dynamic between cats and dog boarders?

I don't have experience with this, but recalled this was discussed previously. Here's a link that may help: https://www.rover.com/community/quest...

I too started in late August and most of my boarding dogs have not been around cats. Luckily my three cats are "dog" cats and just ignore the dogs. A few chases and barking have occurred but mostly my cats brush it off like your cats. At first I was concerned about dogs who never been around cats but now I know my cats can handle themselves and convert non-cat dogs to cat dogs! I have a chaweenie that I do doggy daycare and she thinks the cats are small dogs and the cats think she is a cat. It is so funny!! Have a great day and Happy November!

I have two cats - one that hides any time there's any kind of guest in the house (human or canine!) and one that is always curious about our boarders. I've set up a designated cat room in the house that the cats can get into/out of easily, but that dogs cannot get into (baby gate + cat tower on the inside near the gate; one of my felines is a little less than athletic, so he uses the cat tower to jump the gate when needed). This pretty much does the trick for us- the cats kind of self-monitor.

I always reiterate in my first message with a potential client that we have two cats in the house, even though it's in my profile. I've never had an owner think it would be a problem -- even owners of dogs who proved to be mildly aggressive toward the cats. Usually it becomes more apparent during the meet and greet whether or not it will be an issue during their stay, but it's always hard to predict a dog's behavior once their owner leaves.
