is it bad if i can feel my dog's spine?

My Boston Terrier is at a healthy weight but there is about a 3 inch part of his spine that is very close to the skin. Is it ok to be able to feel his spine?

Yep! You should be able to feel the spine and ribs, with only a small layer of fat over them.

Some dogs are just born with a topline (spine) that is a bit higher in parts. As long as they are at a healthy weight, it shouldn't bother them.

That's completely normal but of course, monitor their eating patterns just to make sure they don't have any health concerns. I have a Yorkie/Maltese and she's around 6 lbs and I can always feel her ribs along her back especially, but she eats like a horse, so it really depends on the dog breed. Heftier dogs like my other dog, Bailey, who's a Yorkie/Poodle/Chihuahua/Cocker-Spaniel/Wiener mix is bulky so it's harder to feel her ribs, but she's at a reasonable weight, too.

As Amberlie said, some dogs may appear to have a bit of an uneven spine. My bully breed mix has a slight roach-back, making the spine oddly visible halfway down his back and making his rear end slope a little more than you would typically see in similar dogs, but his vet said it wasn't severe enough to cause any harm. So if you have any concerns with the shape I would recommend asking your vet!
