How to stop my dog from uranating on the carpet?

My dog continues to pee on the carpet even if he

goes for walks in the morining. Just recently we put wood flooring to prevent it from happening. Any ideas as to why they have to mark inside as well?

How are you cleaning that area? If it still smells like urine they will continue to go on the same spot. If your dog is not neutered then he will mark his territory, he is asserting his dominance. Is this a new behavior or has he always marked in the house? If it's new you might want to check if he started marking ever since you started pet sitting. This might cause him to reestablish his territory. You are going to want to nip this in the butt. You'll have to keep a close eye on him, whenever he even thinks of marking, interrupt that behavior until he gets that behavior is unacceptable. I would tether him to me whenever I'm in the house in order to keep him close and I can watch him.

Marking is a potty training issue, and has nothing to do with hormones. Supervision is the only way to stop this behavior. Making sure the area is cleaned using a pet cleaner is important, so the smell won't entice him to continue to potty there. Anti Icky Poo or Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer are the best enzymatic cleaners that disintegrate the scent molecule that draws the dog to that spot.

How old is he? Is he neutered? Does he hike his leg or squat? How long has he been doing it?
Marking in the house can be challenging to overcome--especially if he's been doing it for many years. Using a belly band might be the easiest management solution.

Try putting his bed there for a few days or feed him there. Dogs don't go to the bathroom where they eat or sleep, so if he believes that space is used for either of those, he should change his behavior.

Just a suggestion, let me know how you figure it out.

I liked all of the above answers, but will also add, use Nature's Miracle to clean up his urine. As the first answer said, if your dog can smell his urine where he's gone before he will continue to pee there.

It's also important to establish if he's peeing or marking. Since you just walked him prior, it sounds like marking, which can also be addressed by reasserting your position as pack leader - only you get to mark there! ;) You can assert your pack leadership in a number of ways like, feeding your dog after you eat, not before. Don't feed him from the table. Not allowing him on the furniture or bed. Also, make sure you lead when walking your dog, don't allow him to lead or pull you. Best of Luck!
