How to help my scared dog?

I let my seven month old pup outside the other night and a neighbor started lighting off fireworks. She freaked out and ran away. I could not find her all night but luckily she found her way home in the morning. Since then she is terrified of the smallest noise and doesn't want to leave my side or even go outside during the evening/night. Is there anything I can do to help her?

One of my favorite training and behavior resources has an article on exactly this issue, and it's definitely worth the read: https://paws4udogs.wordpress.com/2013...

More generically, this article deals with how to help a dog who has had a traumatic experience: https://paws4udogs.wordpress.com/2014...

And finally, your dog may be a good candidate for medical treatment to help with her reconditioning: https://paws4udogs.wordpress.com/2013...

Sophia Yin is the most renowned resource in the animal behavior world, and I would highly recommend any of her publications if you are interested in non-threatening communication with your dog, and solutions to many problems like your own. My absolute favorite remedy for firework-frightened dogs is the Thunder Shirt! It is designed to make the dog feel secure, like it is getting a big hug. However, make sure you only leave it on for the necessary time for it to be therapeutic; otherwise they will become desensitized. Another option is to speak to your vet about the possibility of an anti-anxiety medication as she gets older. Reconditioning may be a good candidate given her young age, as well, to help her as she ages.
