can I withhold extra money on W2 and pay rover taxes with that?

Hi all,

quick question on taxes! I have a job that I use W2 with and do rover on the side. For my W2 I asked them to withhold extra money and the amount of taxes that I'll have to pay for rover is less than the amount I am withholding. I get that I will need to file a 1040 and 1099 but will I also have to send in a check? Or would the government just take the rover taxes from the extra withheld taxes from the W2 job?

Thanks!

You can ask your employer to withhold extra and give them a flat amount, whatever you feel will cover your projected Rover GROSS earnings. The government taxes ALL your income, as a whole. It doesn't care where the withholding comes from. If you've withheld more than you need, you can ask for a refund, carry it over to the next year, or just lower the amount extra you've asked them to take from your paycheck.

FYI, you just file a Form 1040, which will include a Schedule C for the side earnings. A 1099 is what is supplied to you, but it doesn't get filed by you.
