Why doesn't the dog want to walk with me?

There is a dog that I see regularly and she will not go far at all from her house. Sometimes she will go a little bit down the street but not very often. Today she wouldn't go out of her yard. I don't want to pull on the dog's leash to guide her on the walk so I'm at a loss. Any helpful hints would be appreciated.

I think it could be that the owner only feeds the dog at night and I always walk the dog around 4PM. I think maybe she wants to go back to the house because she knows she will get fed after the walk. Could this be the case?

You could ask the owners if their dog hesitates to walk with them and what tips they use. It might be something they experience too.

Some dogs (seems to be especially prevalent with Yorkie breed) are very reluctant to walk away from the home. If that might be the case and it’s a small dog that you’re able to, you might want to try carrying away and letting her walk, probably briskly, back towards home.

Always ask the client what they do if the dog doesn't want to walk, because consistency is key for all of you to benefit from the dog's training.
