Client lied about dog, what should I do ?

So it’s my first client on rover I was pretty excited about booking and we had good communication I asked about potty training and behavior and the client assured that we was a sweet dog who was fully potty trained but nervous to walk to the leash I was okay with that. We met up the conversation was good and it was first night caring for the dog and the pup went to sleep. Second day in the pup is pooping and peeing everywhere all over my carpet on my walls and even on my couch. And the pup refused to walk and when it would the pup would just come back in and pee everywhere. I contacted the owner with my frustration and they tell me that pup has a marking problem but didn’t tell me that before hand. It’s to the point where I bought wee pads because owner said pup was trained with wee pads but forgot then and the pup peed next to it and reuses to even go on it. My apartment now smells like I pee and every inch of my carpet is soiled. No matter how many walks he still comes in smells everything and pees. Which is bringing me extreme stress i even cried because i still have 2 more days if this nightmare because pee is a hard smell to get rid of. Should I charge the owner more?? Idk what to do and the pup is also very whiny I don’t know what to do it cries all day no matter how much I pet soothe feed everything I’m living in hell right now. If I would of know the dog wasn’t potty trained I wouldn’t of accepted because pee in an apartment carpet is unbearable.

Wow. This is totally unacceptable le! I feel your pain, as I have been there. I’ve learned I have to ask specific questions about potty routines, including marking habits. On the dog’s profile, there are even options now where the owner can specify the degree of house training.

….yes, you charge the owner. Another thing I do, is of the dog presents differently than agreed, I send him or her home immediately. I call owner to pick up. If they’re not able to, they have to pay more.

…don’t be Rover’s b-. You and your home need respect. Include in your profile you don’t accept dogs who use the wee pads (they rarely work outside the dog’s home environment). Specify you don’t take dogs who mark.

How can you charge the owner more after the booking?

This has literally been nearly every dog we take. No one tells the truth. I bought doggie diapers this week and will be charging owners for diapers when they lie now.

the worst part is, once you get that first dog marking all over the place, the rest smell it and follow. Even dogs that might not have can be tempted. I think Veronica has a good idea too, set up that you'll charge if you have to use diapers. be careful with leaving diapers on too much though.

Marking is common with many male dogs. Since the owners admitted that they knew this was a problem and forgot to bring necessary supplies, I’d advise you to present the receipt nicely when they return for their dog & ask they reimburse you in cash. You mentioned wee pads. If you haven’t already, get or make belly bands. Belly bands basically wrap around the dog circumference of belly, covering private’s, and fasten on back. If a dog wearing a belly band starts to mark/urinate indoors, they feel the wet sensation and usually stop behavior immediately (unless there’s a medical issue). If you buy them they come in disposable and reusable, and present that receipt when they return too. If you don’t want to go to the store again, take a knee high sock, place a panty liner in the appropriate spot, wrap it around and secure it on the back ideally with Velcro or in a way that won’t injure the dog that it also can’t remove it.

Addition: (after I read this again) this dog is pooping inside too, and belly bands only solve urination. Instead, you’ll need diapers. You can buy disposable dog diapers from a pet retailer or you can buy baby diapers for the correct dog’s weight, loosely slip over dog & using a marker make a mark where the dog’s tail is underneath, remove diaper and cut an opening for tail where marked, thread tail through and place on dog.

For Cleaning: natures miracle is one good cleaner. For Whining: try to tire the dog out with walks or exercise, so that it will rest/sleep. Also try your very best to not get upset because the dog will sense your frustration and heighten it’s separation anxiety (the dog’s humans left and it’s in a strange unfamiliar place with stressed out humans)

You can buy washable belly wraps. I have a senior dog who was a rescue and has always tried to pee in the house, so he requires a belly wrap every day in the house, it has never deterred him not to pee... but at least you can get washable wraps. If you plan to continue dog sitting, get a few sizes

Get a few crates. I ask owners to bring the dogs crate. Then at least the mess is contained. They cannot expect us to just let their dog run all over our house tearing things up....Also, get used to dealing with a lot of behaviors that the owners lied about, seems to be the name of the game in Rover. I actually took out my own insurance as Rover covers nothing for us sitters (medical if we get injured, house damage, etc) I have learned to view the dog as my client not the owners, and thankfully I love animals and try to work through their issues during their stay.....peroxide gets the stain and smell out and the 3% doesn't bleach.

Can I ask what insurance you got?

same !!! a pity rover do not care about dog sitters :-(

I have had this happen, they lied about the age so they didn’t have to pay the puppy rate and the puppy had a horrible rash and cried basically all night. I reported it to Rover. My first response completely brushed it off so I sent another, but you’ll never know if they actually do anything about it because of their privacy rules. I just blocked him.

Sorry to hear your pain. I've been there too plenty of times. I've learned to confine the dog in a small room, preferably the kitchen area. Place baby gates and block the carpeted rooms. Do your best to be calm and enjoy the time with your furry friend. It will be over soon before you know it. It's been a rewarding experience for me. I love pet sitting. I love it so much, I now call it my paid therapy 🥰. I get to love on these furry friends and then they go back to their homes. I get paid, my kids get paid. Everyone is happy. Also, on rover you can specify you're not taking dogs that are not potty trained. Hope it helps. Happy pet sitting 🐕💕

I am living in the same hell right now with 3 dogs. They have owed all over my furniture, walls, appliances, and we are only on night 2. I am trying to figure out how to charge to owner more. I sent a message letting her know there needs to be additional paid or they need to be picked up today.

You should be able to modify the booking and add charges with your comments

i was in your situation where the owner lied about her dog behaviours and i only found out once he started staying with me. i have to move out in 3 weeks and he has damaged my blinds and many of my sentimental belongings and shoes. after pointing the behaviours out and asking if she would be willing to pay for the repair at least, she wasn't happy with it and immediately told me that her friend would be coming to pick her dog up the next morning despite only having 2 nights left in the booking. she did not mention anything about paying me whatsoever. now im stuck with 400£ in repair costs, the amount of money that i earned from this owner is not worth it. but dont let one experience blind you, i have enjoyed my time on rover for 4 years and granted there are not good dog sitting experiences, i believe they would be outweighed by the well-trained and lovable dogs <3
