How do I keep my dog from sneaking on the couch while gone?

I've tried blocking the couch. I've tried catching him in the act. Nothing seems to be working.

Like everyone else said, anything that will scare the dog when they get on the couch. Loud scary noises will work. Baking pans sounds like a great idea because it will make a lot of noise and theyll slip. I also recommend taking them to a trainer.

Hi Valerie!

I would recommend using a baby gate, they come in retractable sizes as well so you can make it as large as you need in order to block off the room where the couch is. Your dog should not be able to knock it down nor jump over it. Your best option is to formally train the dog to stay off of the furniture so no physical block will be needed. Hope this helps!

I was successful by just putting the magazines from the coffee table on the couch before I left for work. That always did the trick.

Aluminum foil also works well for some as a deterrent. It both makes a noise and feels unusual on their paw pads, and they should avoid it. After some time, they should be conditioned to avoid the couch even without the aluminum foil.

Large metal trays (like baking sheets) will also work. You can even put mouse traps UNDER the baking sheets so they make a loud scary noise when the pups jump on the couch! Make sure to secure the traps such that they wont hurt your pup!

I've had great success with sofa scram/scat mats (like these: http://amzn.com/B004GQGN50). You lay them flat on the couch, flip the switch, and it will make a loud beep when pressure is put on it. We used these for awhile, then used them while turned off (it still worked as a deterrent), and now we leave them off the couch, and our dog rarely gets on the couch now.

The other option is getting an extra couch cushion for a doggie bed!
