With Covid 19 I have lost almost all of my clients, can I apply for unemployment?

I usually bring in over $500 a month but with everyone working from home I no longer have any clients. Is there something I can do about this?

Under normal circumstances, independent contractors wouldn't be eligible for unemployment. However, the recently passed CARES Act is giving the states the Federal funds to expand coverage. Moreover, you should be getting so far a one-time check from the Federal government. That is separate from the unemployment compensation.

Here is the link for your state:

Corryn, please note that it says right at the very beginning that they will soon announce procedures for independent contractors. So you will have to wait before you start the application process.

In Virginia you have to earn $290 a week from Rover or other sources to qualify for unemployment, so not everyone may qualify - just found this out as I was applying

Unemployment has always been administered by the states and would vary. In the link I provided to Corryn for Tennessee, it says the amount is determined on the basis of the applicant's earnings for the prior 18 months.

Still no update for PA on filing for self-employed individuals or “gig” workers. I went from 20 clients to 3. Trying to stay positive!
