Do you charge more for administering medication?

I'm able to provide insulin shots among other things which I realize isn't super common but it is in demand. I haven't been charging extra for this...do you?

This has come up several times before. You may want to read these two:

Rhianna, I took a look at your rates for house sitting. Even given the area, I would say a client would expect to have that service included since they are paying for your medical qualifications. I really wouldn't nickel and dime them to death.

The answer to so many of the pricing questions is simply to feel free to charge for it if the market will support it. Rates and practices are very different from place to place and there is a lot of room for personal preferences of sitter and owner.

As someone who is comfortable administering insulin injections you might just put up your general rate to reflect your increased experience. On the other hand as relatively few dogs require insulin injections, maybe you feel that you should just charge a bit extra for those that do.

Personally I make a decision once I have met the dog. If the dog is an easy patient then it's no trouble to me to give the insulin shots and I don't charge extra for that. If the dog is more difficult then I will charge extra for it (and other behavioural issues). Even a dog that lets its owner give it an insulin shot may not actually allow a stranger to do so, so where insulin shots are required I get the owner to let me give the shot at the meet and greet. If the dog is very distressed by me giving its insulin shot then I might not take the booking at all.

If you take the view that even though giving an insulin shot is for you a routine thing, you feel it is an extra responsibility with potential complications and so is deserving of increased fees, that is completely valid. Either the owner agrees with you or they don't.

I side with Karen as it already seems you are charging a premium rate for your services so any medication should be included in that rate. Best of luck going forward.
