Deductible expenses?

I am a dog sitter for Rover. I had a fence installed for the safety and protection of the dogs. Is this expense deductible or partially deductible? Also what about lawn service, carpet cleaning?

I asked my CPA about deductions for a carpet shampooer and basically the answer is yes. You have to keep the receipt and won't get the full value you paid, but it's something

You should talk with a tax professional. For the fence, it depends on your situation- generally you could deduct the amount based on the percentage you are using it for Rover. Because you'd have to take care of your lawn regardless, lawn service would generally not be deductible unless you can prove it was for your Rover business such as a poop removal service. Carpet cleaning would generally be deductible because it's related to your Rover business. Just don't do it every week or something because that would look like you're abusing the deduction. Remember to save receipts and other documentation. Good luck!

The specific items you mention in your post should be discussed with your CPA or your tax advisor, even H&R Block can help you prepare your tax returns and answer your questions. Best of luck with your Rover business

As a former tax preparer, yes! If an improvement is made specific to a job most or all of those upgrades are deductable. One drawback may be having to spread it out over two or three years to get full credit.

I know there's a limit but I don't see why you couldn't deduct it (or at least part of it) from taxes. I deduct 30%ish of my phone bill because I use it for Rover along with a certain amount of office stuff and dog supplies and had no trouble last year. I'll be doing the same with my recent laptop purchase. So yeah, consult first of course but you should be fine claiming it.

If you use TurboTax to file your taxes, they offer a really nice HUGE list of deductions related to the pet care industry. But like others have said, it is always best to consult a professional when it comes to preparing taxes.
