My 2 year old Boxer still pees in his kennel what do I do?

I'm a college student and I'm home quite a bit. He gets let out often but some times when I leave I always let him outside before I put him in his kennel and then I go run errands. Well when I come back I usually have to clean up a mess. I don't understand why he does this. Im only gone for like an hour or so, also if my roommate leaves to go get the door (I live in an apartment so if he leaves he has to go to the security door which is down the hall so he is completely out of sight.) he will run into his kennel and pee. No matter when he was last let out. I have no idea what to do I'm just tired of cleaning up pee. (side note he doesn't poop he just pees)

It sounds like he is peeing in his crate because he's upset, nervous, or scared. Peeing is a common reaction to anxiety in dogs. It could be he's using the crate either because that's his "safe place" and he's upset so he goes in there then pees because it's a manifestation of nerves. Or, depending on his past he may think that the crate is where he is supposed to pee.

If the root cause is due to anxiety it's likely the only solution will be to hire a trainer (preferably one that is an animal behaviorist) to help train your dog. One thing you can do is make sure the crate is not too large - it should be just tall enough for him to stand in and as long as his head and body (not including tail). I will say it's probably better that he's using his crate for anxiety peeing instead of the carpet. I know you're probably tired of cleaning up but there are worse places he could be peeing.

Good luck!
