My dog is staying with a sitter and has gone missing. What can I do?

We are in Chicago now and our dog is 6 hours away. He went missing after only one day at the sitters. What do I do if he isn't found?

Hi Rebecca -

So sorry to hear your dog is missing. Definitely contact Rover support as a first step, and then cover your bases by contacting all the local shelters, vet clinics, etc in your home area. Provide them with a description of your dog, and if possible, pictures, license and microchip info. Also post ads on craigslist/nextdoor/local facebook pages. If you can, enlist a few friends to help keep an eye on those sites to scan for found pet ads daily. If you try to do it yourself it could take hours out of every day. Anyone who picks up a stray with tags is likely going to try the numbers on his tags first, and failing that, get him scanned for a microchip at their vet office or at a shelter. They may scan for lost pet ads online and maybe post a found ad. Keep calling the local shelters daily to check for new arrivals that might match your dog's description. Even if they take a lost pet report from you, they may not have the staff/time available to compare each new arrival to all the lost pet listings, so it's important you keep checking. Again, very sorry to hear this happened. I know I'd be in a panic if either of my dogs were missing. I hope this helps you organize and plan for his safe return.
