My dog is limpimg after chasing a ball. How long before taking to vet?

Yesterday morning we were playing fetch with Lilly (8yo) on grass and she suddenly started to limp in her hind leg. She puts some weight on it but not fully. We checked her paws and stretched her leg out but we cannot locate her pain area. Today is day 2 and she is still limping. Shes been put on rest and only getting up to relieve herself. Is it possibly just a sprain or strain? How long before I should take her to a vet if theres no improvement? Thank you!

I would take her in today. It sounds like she may have torn her Cruciate Ligament. (if that is the case) Hopefully it is only a partial tear and pain meds along with rest will help her, if not she may need surgery. Best of Luck!

On our way to the vet now 🤞

Sending my prayers. Please do keep us updated.

The vet has trouble examining her but does suspect a tear. We will be bringing her back again later when the vet has a break for further examination and xrays with sedation. Lets hope its just a partial tear.

Poor thing!

TPLO surgery today. Going to be a rough, emotional draining 4 months ahead. Our other dog had a repair 2 years ago too. So we have experience. But doesn't lessen the anguish. Poor baby. We just wanted to help her lose some weight with exercise but got a major injury instead. Sigh Thanks for the help

Hi Diem, I so hear you. Unfortunately, torn cruciates are so common . I am so glad you were able to take Lilly in and get the sx done. Sounds like Lilly has wonderful mommy, who is going to be able to help her with a speedy recovery. My prayers go out you & Lilly. Best wishes, Take Care! -Erica
