how long do dogs have giardia?

my 11 month old Golden retriever pup has had loose stool for over 3 weeks and has been on Flagyl (sorry for the wrong spelling). we claled the vet and she said we need another more expensive medicine and can take months. we’ve not been able to send my dog to daycare so shes become very sad. do you think the vet is bs-ing us and should we get w second opinion??

You can always get a second opinion from another vet but it is a serious disease and should be treated along with your home. If I was a sitter I would never take a dog with active giardia Read more here https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/giardia...

There is a lot of information that is needed to really answer that question. Over all how is your golden? Eating and drinking well? activity normal? You mentioned that he has Diarrhea for 2 weeks and is on Flagyl. How long has he been on the Flagyl? Has the diarrhea gotten any better or any worse in the last 3 weeks ? Any other changes with your golden? any new food, plants outside he has been chewing on, new treats, ect? If your golden has had diarrhea for 3 weeks straight, I worry about him being dehydrated. Typically Flagyl is given for about 10-14 days. It is recommended to recheck your pets stool when done with medicine. Than recheck fecal sample to make sure negative. If you have not yet, you want to make sure you are feeding your golden a bland diet. Plain Chicken breast (no salt, no pepper, no skin. only chicken breast) and plain white rice. again no seasonings. You can do this to settle his tummy. You many also want to talk to your vet about giving your golden Imodium. (you normally can give your dog Imodium for a day or two than stop, you do not want to back him up. but check with your vet first.) If you do not feel comfortable with your Vet than yes, I would look for a new vet. You want to make sure that you feel comfortable with your vet. That they explain everything to you and are available to answer you questions. (my personal opinion if your vet did not already recommend my suggestions, I would consider getting a second opinion. The other thing that they do recommend is using a probiotic, such as Floriflora. ) Best of luck!!
