What if the dogs owner wants the dog to see a vet?

I am caring for a dog who was recently brought into the USA from Brazil. This can be a very stressful situation for the dog who had a bad shipping experience a few years ago.

The owners say the dog has been on a diet which requires a subscription in the US. They dropped her off with a bag of new food the dog is not accustomed to. She has refused to eat now for about 36 hours. She has experienced diarrhea for a little more than 24 hours. She drinks water occasionally but will not eat. She is still active and likes to play catch.

I have been in touch with the owner who asked me to watch her for "the next 12 hours." I am about to call and give him the update as above.

Does the insurance through Rover help cover the vet visit and if so how? What do I need to do?

Thanks, Jerry Nordeen

No, Rover's insurance doesn't cover. There is also a deductible for the owner anyway,. Talk to the owner about what they'd like you to do. If they want the dog taken to the vet, who may need to put the dog on I/V fluids, then they should contact the vet to insure not only do you have the authority but that the vet has approval to bill them.

In addition to this, bringing the dog into the country, the owners should have a veterinary selected/used previously. Going there is best option if it absolutely comes down to it, as they will have the dogs records and owners information. It's always good practice to get the vet info in advance

In the meantime, have you tried feeding her plain rice and boiled chicken? My dog has a sensitive stomach, and this was what my vet recommended when he's having problems.

That’s what we always go to before we do anything else as well. 3 dogs and 2 tons of boiled rice and chicken later...
