Are bark collars a good training tool?

I would greatly appreciate the thoughts of those who have actually used them...and not just thoughts of cruelty. I have used one on a set of sister pups as suggested by owner. I had my own feelings of such items. BUT... after three different days, one of the pups stopped her erratic barking and has not use collar since. She still barks when it is appropriate. The other needs some days as reminders. Now I have a young male who has passed his puppy hood and is showing the same behavior of barking at nothing! Suggestions/thoughts, please.

Some dog trainers do teach the owner how to use them. Other trainers use other training methods, like teaching the dog to bark on command, more exercising young dogs, etc. I am on a couple dog training sites:

I have used them in the past. The secret, as with any training tool is you have to be consistent. I had 2 terriers that were awful barkers, within a week of wearing a no bark collar, they pretty much had quit the nuisance barking. I've also had dogs debarked that were extreme obnoxious barkers. Barking then only sounds like a whisper, but the dog would bark at everything, a book on the table, shoes in the corner, a standing still broom or vacuum, even a newspaper sitting on a chair. Just barked at any and everything. Bark collar had no effect so he was debarked. Super good after that.
