My dog did damage to my sitters home, whose responsible she left him alone?

It was an overnight stay.

Fannie gave a beautifully worded explanation below. I'll just add I had a dog in my care that I was told would be okay if left alone for 2 hours. I stepped out to my curb to get newspaper and within 5 min, she chewed through and destroyed an interior door. Be honest with your sitter and yourself.

Was the sitter specifically told not to leave your dog alone? Is your dog usually crated when left alone and if so, did you provide a crate and if yes, did the sitter simply not use it?

When you are boarding a dog for over night stays, the sitter may have to leave your dog alone to go run errands, some sitters work or go to school, this is the difference between commercial boarding where there is staff at all times and in-home boarding where people care for dogs in their home or the owner's home, not all sitters do this full time so dogs are sometimes left alone but the maximum time the dog can be left alone should be discussed during the booking process to insure that the sitter's schedule and dog's needs meet. If your dog cannot be left alone, this must be discussed and the sitter must be able to provide that extra service, both for the potential damage to the sitter's home but also to insure your dog is cared for the way he needs.

If you had not discussed this prior to the booking and the sitter did everything according to what was discussed but your dog still damaged the sitter's home, it is your choice to reimburse them or not but I am certain it would be very appreciated if you did since the Rover insurance does not cover damage to the sitter's home.

For sitters, I strongly suggest drafting a boarding agreement with all of these things well explained and have your clients fill them out. This way you all are on the same page and issues of getting reimbursed or not for damages are settled even before they happen.

Beautifully worded Fannie!

Does anyone have a boarding agreement sample they would be willing to share? I had a dog do about $400 in damage and I followed instructions. I would like to avoid this awkwardness in the future.
