Why does my dog have chronic ear infections?

My dog's ear seems to get infected quite easily, and I wonder is this is part of a larger problem. His ear hurts a lot and gets red, and even after we treat the infection, it returns. What should I do about this??

If your dog has floppy ears or swims a lot these could attribute to chronic ear infections

Chronic ear infections are often associated with allergies. Ear infections are also common in dogs with hanging ears or who spend a lot of time swimming.

If your dog has allergies, there are medications that can help. For dogs with overly-moist ears, special drying agents can be used in the ears. And if your vet prescribes antibiotics, make sure you finish all medication to prevent resistant bacteria.
