Your dog may have a parasite or a digestive problem. Otherwise it could be a behavior problem. I would take him to the vet however to rule out a health problem.
There are many potential reasons for this behavior: Your dog may be upset about something and be leaving a message. He might be sick, and may not be able to control it. There could be a digestive issue. Switching to new food can cause this. Any major changes can cause stress which can lead to it too
