So they can have it for later!
Although our pet dogs have been domesticated practically since humans stopped dragging their knuckles on the ground, they still have a lot of the traits displayed by their wild wolf cousins. They hide bones so that they will have something out by for when there is a shortage. If there is ever a rawhide famine, our dogs will be able to find their stashes in our couches.
