Why does my dog slide on the carpet?

This is a question that we often get from sitters and owners who work with Rover. Help the community out by answering them in our forum!

I've seen dogs scoot for a few reasons, but the primary one is needing their anal glands cleaned out. While it is possible to do it yourself and some of my friends do, I suggest paying someone because a) ew and b) you don't want your dog to associate you with that particular feeling. See the vet!

I agree about the anal glands needing to be expressed. There is a difference in how groomers and vets do it. Groomers can only express externally while vets can do it internally. I only have a vet do my Toller girl's glands.

Are you referring to when a dog drags their butt across the floor? Probably needs its anal glands drained....it's a very common procedure done at the vet. Most dogs only need it done 1-2 times a year, some require it a lot more than that. It's not expensive.

Scooting their rear across the carpet is usually a sign your dog has worms. http://www.petwave.com/Dogs/Health/Ta...

If your dog is scooting their bottom across the floor, it typically means that their anal glands are too full. You can take your pet to a groomer or veterinarian to have their glands expressed. When finding a place that expresses glands, ask them if they express internally or externally. Internal expression is the better option and should last longer. If this doesn't solve the problem, you may want to take your pet to be checked by their veterinarian. Typically when glands are expressed, you shouldn't see the issue of scooting across the floor for at least a couple of weeks, although, this varies from dog to dog.

If it's his or her hind end that he or she is sliding on the carpet, it could be to wipe off the rear end after going to the bathroom. The problem could also be the anal glands.

Try washing your dog's rear end. If that doesn't solve the problem, your dog should be seen at your vet's office to have the anal glands checked.

Likely trying to drain anal glands. As mentioned this can be done at the vet. Groomers can also drain them. Or your dog can do it itself but often leaves the discharge on the carpet or whatever surface was used. Another theory, your dog is leaving his scent without peeing/pooping
