Why does my dog keep getting hot spots?
Is my dog allergic to something? What else could be a reason for hot spots? I'd love to give him something for this to stop it from spreading...

Yes, allergies (environmental and/or food based) could be the cause. Flea and bug bites, grooming issues, boredom/stress and other medical reasons could also be causes.
If the hot spots are on his stomach, it could be from bacteria. Neosporin has worked great for me in the past.
I use coconut oil to treat it but if this is a recurring issue, I would suggest bovine or equine colostrum. IT resets the immune system and helps with any sort of auto-immune issues, I have had quite a bit of success with this. Here is an article about it: http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/...
