Why does my dog seem sad?

This is a question that we often get from sitters and owners who work with Rover. Help the community out by answering them in our forum!

All pets have a special bond with their owner and are sad when they don't see their loved one. Once the pup realizes that the person who will taking care of him/her will love them just the same they adjust. It's really just that they miss their owner , when that happens sitters must pamper them. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Dogs require stimulation, interaction & routine. If something in their world changes they can become depressed or seem "sad."

It's possible that your dog is sad. You can examine: activity level--does dogs seem withdrawn or inactive? not participate in the things they once enjoyed? eating change? sleeping change? was there a recent change in environment (i.e. new home, addition or loss of loved one - human or furry)? To help them, give extra TLC, keep them engaged, do more of the things they like to do, give them a little more exercise, and reward them when they show signs of happiness.

Dogs are sad when their owners leave because they are a "safety blanket". Dogs are no different than humans when it comes to emotions. After time passes by your pet will soon feel comfortable. If there is a dominant dog in the house I would separate them with a gate or crate if needed.

There are a variety of reasons for your dog to seem sad. Dogs do since your emotions so if you have been stressed or depressed recently they could be picking up on those moods. If this mood persists I would suggest taking them to your vet to make sure there isn't something more serious wrong.

Although dogs do not have the complexity of thought, they do have emotions. Dogs can be depressed just as humans can. Dogs can become sad when they miss a loved one, or when they are scolded. If your dog loses interest long term in eating, playing, or going for walks, you should look into this with your vet. Dogs who are ill can appear sad as well.
