Why does my dog keep scratching the floor?

Dogs display many behaviors that their humans don’t always understand. Scratching the floor is a common canine ritual that can be traced back to the time before dogs were domesticated for human companionship. Besides scratching in an effort to plump up their sleeping areas, cool off and scare away nasty critters, dogs may also scratch to claim their territory.
