How can I be sure that the sitter will not rob me, or act unlawfully in my home?

I want to be sure that if a sitter does take something of mine, or act inappropriately in my home, that they are responsible for this. I don't want to come home and my TV, dog, or laptop be missing. Also, my home is where I keep important documents, how do I know that the sitter will not steal my identity by using this information.

In addition to the thoughtful answers provided, you also may add a "doggy camera" that can be checked remotely and even let the sitter know before then that you're recording activity and may look in live-time to see how the dogs are doing. I've heard you can order online for about $100. A couple of my clients use these because they genuinely miss their dogs and it helps with their separation. When they see me with their dogs, they usually send me a nice text message, and we can have an impromptu conversation.

Rover's insurance would cover damage/theft to your property:

You would have to check with Rover's Customer Support about identity theft, but typically your homeowners insurance covers that.

For your own peace of mind, however, you should probably look for a sitter who has undergone a background check. That is indicated by a badge:

Finally you should probably choose a sitter who has reviews (not just testimonials) which would give you an idea of their performance, reliability and trustworthiness.

Actually the legal terms & conditions specifically state that theft either by the service provider or anyone else is NOT covered by Rover's liability insurance. Not sure if there is some other stipulation the does include theft but thats what I read today (04/20/2017).

You can also ask the sitter to provide references. I'm a traveling sitter, and while no one has asked me for references, I would be happy to provide them if asked. You can have more than one meet and greet, but I do agree with Karen--look for sitters that have multiple reviews. Look for the yellow stars, and the more the merry!
