Why does my dog howl at sirens?

Dogs are much more sensitive to higher frequencies than humans so they tend to howl at the sound of sirens because it hurts their ears. There's also the theory that dogs howl at sirens because they believe it's a pack of dogs communicating with them from a distance, so they feel the need to respond back.

Loud sounds often startle pets who are not used to hearing them. Similar to thunderstorms or fireworks loud sirens often evoke some kind of reaction. Howling is a common reaction and it generally suggests that they're frightened or just excited.
