Is there a way to talk to the sitter without knowing an exact date for a "stay"?

I am elderly and forsee a short hospital stay in the future but since I have no date for it, it is hard for me to "request a stay" date. I wanted to get "all my ducks in a row" BEFORE any of this medical stuff gets here, and wanted to have a sitter that I have met and talked to. I'd like a meet and greet but since I can't give a "stay date" I don't know how to go about getting in touch with a sitter. I have put off other surgeries, etc because I refuse to leave my dogs outside and/or unattended (and loved) while I was in the hospital but getting a sitter in mind to call if and when I need them would take a load off my mind. If I don't have a "stay date" how do I arrange a meet and greet with a sitter?

Hello Midge, I have this problem. I need to communicate with the sitters BEFORE i choose a date. I have done it the "Rover" way and choose a date according to the sitters calendar availability and the sitter comes back to say "no" I prefer to communicate with the sitter FIRST. Rover change this!!

Currently there is no way to contact a sitter through Rover other than requesting a stay. What I would suggest is to pick a date around your approximate surgery date and put that in. Then explain your situation to the sitter when they respond.

As a sitter, I have no problem meeting with someone before the actual stay dates are set.

Cari, That is exactly what I have been doing, explaining myself or getting a no response for the fictitious date and it has been causing a lot of confusion. You can change this and you must to have the most success with your online service.

I concur with the other answers here. I would send a request to sitters for potential dates, or even just a misc. date in the future. Explain that you will be having a surgery and although you don't have exact dates just yet, you want to set up a meet and greet so you don't need to worry about it down the road. As a sitter, I've had owners contact me with similar situations and I have no problem meeting with them and penciling them in on my own personal calendar for the potential dates. If you honestly don't know when you may need the sitter, picking a random date is fine!

I would also suggest that you interview more than one sitter, just in case your first choice isn't available on the specific dates you actually end up needing. If you're open to it, scheduling a test stay, either overnight or daycare could provide extra assurance for you, knowing that your dogs will be happy and comfortable whenever the need arises!

What a lot of HOG WASH

I agree! This is a flaw in this website, I want to be able to meet the sitter long before I book!

At this time, you would need to select a date in order to contact a potential sitter. I would recommend stating you do not need the given dates, just would like to meet for potential dates in the future. If a sitter clicks 'Book It' the request will not be confirmed until you click 'accept.'
