Why is Easter still not a Holiday?

Heads up fellow Sitters!! Easter bookings are starting and Rover still does not automatically charge Easter at the Holiday rate. I just booked a repeat client and it wasn't until after our conversations about the booking were well underway that I realized the amount calculated by Rover was not a Holiday rate. Luckily it's a 2 week stay with an easy dog so I'm not too bummed about getting my regular Extended rate instead of the Holiday extended rate.

I just hate having to increase my price for this situation. It makes Owners feel like we are being unfair or tricking them.

Easter being Holiday Rate was a major topic of discussion last year. MOST Sitters felt it should be Holiday rate. The fact that fell on deaf ears is more proof that Rover does not care to listen to Sitter's concerns

President's Day is also not a holiday according to Rover's schedule! Rover's first official holiday of the year is Memorial Day in May. Something to be aware of!

Memorial Day: May 26–May 28 \ 4th of July: July 3–July 4 \ Labor Day: September 1–September 4 \ Thanksgiving: November 20–November 25 \ Christmas and New Years: December 19–January 1

It makes sense President's Day is not the Holiday rate... How many people have a family gathering or go on extended vacation for President's Day??

I have to disagree. I have always had the day off from my day job and pre-Rover I would use the time to go skiing or do other winter sports. Flights, hotels, etc. are always more expensive on 3 day weekends like President's Day and I think it would make sense for Rover to mirror that price increase.

That may be but I just don't see President's Day as being on par with Easter when it comes to people being willing to pay Holiday Rate. But I'm glad to hear you are saying it SHOULD be Holiday Rate. I was thinking you were going to say since Pres day is not then Easter should not.

Oh absolutely! I think 'holiday' rates should apply to anytime of year that demand is significantly higher, just like hotels and airlines do!

After looking at the list of official Rover holiday periods, I think they only recognize Federal holidays, i.e. the Post Office/governments/etc are closed. There are other unofficial holidays where companies have the option of granting time off. I think Rover should allow us to set holiday rates for those holidays as well, just don't make it mandatory like they do the other ones.

Schools here in Texas now get a week Spring break that usually falls around Easter, as well as a fall break sometime in October. I definitely would like to charge holiday rates for those times.

Setting Holiday rates up-front in a flexible manner is a good idea because as you indicate each area might be different. Plus different holidays are important to different groups of people. I found a Sitter who's Jewish to cover for me on Christmas Eve. She might want to charge more for Passover etc

Good question! Especially since most schools and businesses treat Good Friday through Easter as holiday time off....

Comments

I understand that Easter is a holiday for family, but I've never had Good Friday off at any of my schools growing up (public) or businesses (private). I think I'm at the wrong companies!

Your public school did not have Easter Break??

Nope! Occasionally breaks would occur the week before or after Easter weekend, but plenty of times it wouldn't be related to Easter at all! We had "ski weeks", usually in February after President's Day, and a Spring Break in April-ish. I went to public schools in WA, OR and CA.

Spring breaks are staggered among the public schools in the city and suburbs so that not every one is off at the same time. I can't think of any businesses that close on Good Friday and this goes back decades. Therefore it would be inappropriate to single out the Easter weekend for a holiday rate.

We got off on a tangent discussing Spring Break. The original question is about EASTER not Spring Break.

If you want to charge a holiday rate on Easter, then by all means do so. Hardly anything is closed on Easter. Rover uses the Federal holiday list as others have mentioned above.

I realize the whole "Federal holiday" excuse but that is my point, IMO a change should be made. Charging a holiday rate AFTER the person has requested a booking seems underhanded. Maybe Rover should make Easter at Holiday rate and then Sitters can remove it. Nobody minds paying less. LOL!!

BTW if Rover actually used the Federal holiday list we'd get Holiday rate for President's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Veterans Day and Columbus Day.

I stand corrected about the Federal holiday schedule. Like I said, put it in your profile that you charge a holiday rate for Easter. It is not a holiday for everyone and businesses rarely close.

Easter should definitely be a holiday. Most schools center spring break around it. They could call it spring holiday rate.
