What can I give my dog for bad breath?

My dog has had really bad breath recently and I'm wondering if I can give him something for it. Should I change his diet? Will it go away? Is he sick??

It was brought to my attention recently that depending on the dog and their diet, you should have their teeth cleaned every 4-5 years by a vet. If you notice a lot of brown plaque on their teeth you should bring it up to your vet. Bad teeth can lead to other problems later. Treats for temp solution.

Bad breath could be a sign of dental problems. Small dogs especially should get dentals every few years. Fresh parsley chopped up and added to their food is great for bad breath.

Bad breath is normal for most dogs. However if you want to make the smell better they make doggy toothpaste and toothbrushes but you can also use something like dentastix or greenies

Most often, bad breath is caused by dental or gum disease, and certain dogs -- particularly small ones -- are especially prone to plaque and tartar. I think the best thing to do is try to brush their teeth regularly, but this can be difficult! Especially if they HATE the process. It's best to start slow, be gentle and offer treats for rewards. I've also used a gel that just needs to be rubbed on the surface of their teeth. If you can get it somewhat on their teeth, it can usually distribute pretty well naturally in your dog's mouth. There is also a water additive that I hear works really well!

Dental hygiene is important in dogs just like it is in humans! To help eliminate bad breath you have a few options. You can use chews that are specifically made to help clean teeth and combat bad breath, although these may add unnecessary calories to your dog's diet. You can also purchase a doggie tooth brush and toothpaste. It will take some time for your dog to get used to this routine, I would recommend starting by using your finger with a bit of toothpaste on it and graduate to a brush once they become used to the feeling. Personally, however, I use a product you can find in your local pet store that is a simple water additive. You put in a couple of teaspoons each time you fill their water bowl and it helps to eliminate bad breath and clean their teeth.

Whatever you choose to use, remember that your buddy's oral hygiene is important and it is always recommended to discuss these things with your vet!

Establish a brushing routine with your dog (especially small dogs!). Try to brush at the same time everyday. Brush after walking and feeding when your dog is more relaxed ! Use a gentle circle motion with a toothpaste your dog may enjoy.

Regular vet dentals are essential to remove build up that may cause bad breath. A vet will remove hard to reach areas of build up that a tooth brush will not reach. Regular dental care will keep your dog happy and healthy and will prevent tooth decay and painful extractions ! 🐶

You'll need to identify what is causing the bad breath? Yearly cleanings are always recommended for dogs to get their teeth cleaned. Also you can try giving a water additive. I use Arm & Hammer Water addidtive. I just add a cap full of the stuff into the water to help with Toby's stinky breath and it realy does work. Its taseless and odorless so the dogs can't tel the difference in their water. Also there are treats to help. I rotate among a few brands: Nature Balance (pricey but can be found on sale often specially on amazon), DentaStix by Pedigree (can be found at your local grocery store or walmart/target) and lastly Milk Bone Dental Chews. My dog gets tired of the same flavors so I switch between brands to keep him entertained. He enjoys and they help neutralize the odor in between cleanings. Also I would try brushing teeth weekly if your dog lets you.
