Oftentimes a dog will have skin symptoms for an allergy to something other than a contact allergy. If possible, take the dog to a vet for diagnosis, in case it is a food sensitivity or inhaled allergy.

Shampoos containing oatmeal are often used for allergic dogs. You could also try one containing hydrocortisone or diphenhydramine.

Hi there, I've worked with vet clinics and am currently in vet school, and my best advice may not seem like the most helpful: consult your vet! There are different prescription shampoos, only available from a veterinarian, which are made for dogs with chronic allergic issues. They are tailor made for specific allergies, skin infections, or working with sensitive skin (or any combination thereof). If you want to try something from the store first, find something with no scents, made for sensitive skin, and containing oatmeal. Soap-free shampoos are easier on the skin, as well. If you don't find something you like, it may be a question to bring up during your next pet wellness exam- allergies are fairly common, and these shampoos are very good for these special needs pups! Good luck!

With many dogs possibly being allergic to grains, oatmeal shampoos are to be avoided.

Always speak with your Veterinarian, they have anti-itch, natural, and medicated shampoos for allergies.

It's always great to get a Vet's opinion on the extremity of your pup's allergies. That being said, I've found that Earthbath All Natural Pet Shampoo in Oatmeal + Aloe is really great in alleviating itchiness. It doesn't contain harsh chemicals and I've been using it for a while. You can find it on Amazon for ~$9-10

Like others have mentioned I would speak to a Vet first. However my pup has really bad allergies (both food and plants, pollen) and I've found that tea tree shampoo works great. The one I used is by John Paul called, https://www.chewy.com/john-paul-pet-tea-tree-shampoo-dogs/dp/40915?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=John%20Paul%20Pet&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKEAiArbrFBRDL4Oiz97GP2nISJAAmJMFao4-Z1ebpSGBAZiG9T7wPlyTuFOD1CJgCRngwYSCo8xoCn_rw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds (Pet Tea Tree Shampoo for Dogs & Cats). I haven't tried oatmeal as my dog is allergic to it but that might be a good ingredient to look for too.

That would depend on what the allergies are. Most dogs with sensitive, itchy skin and slight allergies usually do well with a natural oatmeal or tea tree shampoo like ones with simple ingredients from Espree or Earthbath. Sulfodine medicated shampoo may not smell as pretty but is good for dogs with more severe allergies when typical shampoos are ineffective. Also, I usually recommend using hypoallergenic pet wipes on paws and affected areas for seasonal allergy sufferers after walking to remove pollen and other possible allergens, especially if they're chewing their paws or have stained paws and/or fur loss.
