Can Anyone Help Me Find a Temporary Foster Home for My Cat?

Hi,

My name is Alyson – I have a bit of a story to tell and I am in desperate need of help.

I’ve recently got out of a domestic violence relationship. My ex hit me, spent all of my savings and maxed out my credit cards, causing me to have to move from my home in Salem to the Gresham area where my ex-husband’s (not my abuser) family are helping me out. Currently I am not on a lease anywhere and while I have a note from my therapist, saying I need a companion pet, because of my now destroyed credit and damage caused to my previous rental residence, I am unable to declare my cat prior to getting on a lease as I can be refused for any number of other reasons. My ex-husband and his girlfriend agreed to look after my cat for a little bit until I can get on a lease, but now they no longer want to look after him as he has been keeping them awake at night meowing.

I’ve had my cat since I found him under a bush at about the age of 7 weeks – I am the only consistent human he has ever known and I can only imagine that he is terrified. He was very aware of the upcoming move from Salem and I could tell he knew something was going on. Then the next thing he knows is he is manhandled into a crate, put in the car and driven to a strange house with people he doesn’t know. I feel so bad that he is terrified and having to be moved from place to place :(

I am desperate to keep my cat, but don’t know where to turn. I am currently unemployed (I was living off of my savings until my abusive ex spent it all) and looking for work so I am unable to pay for boarding, otherwise I would do that in a heartbeat. I was hoping that maybe someone here would be able to provide some information about how to get my cat into temporary foster care until I am able to have him with me, whenever that may be (sooner rather than later I hope). Of course once I find work, I am more than happy to pay for him to be boarded in a kind home until he can move back in with me.

Thank you so much to anyone reading this - any information or help would be so appreciated.

I would suggest reaching out to local animal shelters and see if they have services or programs you could use. Homeless centers and women's shelters also often have resources for people with pets. You could reach out to the Rover boarders in your area directly and ask if any of them would consider fostering your cat for you. Posting on Craigslist is also an option to find someone wanting a temporary companion.

Thank you - I have contacted a lot of shelters in the metro area and most of them are not able to help unless I am surrendering my cat, which is what I am hoping to avoid. I am hoping by posting here that someone in my area may see and be able to help out as I am honestly unable to pay right now :(

Hi Alyson is the cat still available for fostering?
