Harness recommendations for two older, large dogs?

Hi,

My client wants to stop using a choke collar and wants other options for her 9 yr old (55 lb) black lab and 13 yr old (50 lbs) Akita Inu.

Any recommendations for the best kind of gentle yet effective harness/leash that would work for these dogs?

Hi these worked great at the ASPCA for dogs of all sizes. https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Harness-Medium-BLACK-SILVER/dp/B0009ZD3QY%3C/p%3E (https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Harness-Medium-BLACK-SILVER/dp/B0009ZD3QY)

If the issue is with the dogs pulling a harness may not be the best fix for pulling... With some dogs (including my own) using a harness can entice the dog to continue pulling. I have read up on prong collars which seem to be safer than a choke or martingale.

Hi Sarah: I use the Walk EZ leash for my own dog, and also client dogs that pull. It's simple, yet effective....and what I love best is that it's easy hook up without adjusting buckles/straps/etc. You can find it here: http://www.aquatherapups.com/walk-ez-...

I have 2 large dogs and started using harnesses years ago. I have 2 different types but really like the Kong harness. The handle on the back is really convenient. "Kong Comfort Dog Harness and Traffic Loop"

The placement of the leash on the harness can help with the pulling. If the leash is connected to the harness at the chest you can utilize the dogs own strength in the action of pulling to pull the dog back towards you to correct the behavior. When the leash is connnected to the harness on the back the action of pulling will continue as normal.

Happy tails!

Hi Sarah, if you are still looking for advice, I love the PetSafe Easy Walk Harness. Unlike most harnesses, it clips in the front of the chest, and when they pull it turns their body back to you, which ultimately completely eliminates pulling!

Best of luck!

Ps. If possible, buy it on Amazon! It's generally about half the price on there than in stores!
