Is it customary to tip?

Should I tip the sitter? If so, how much is appropriate?

I don't accept tips. I think it creates an awkward situation. (Like you, people don't know if they should. If I become accustomed to accepting tips I'll feel slighted when someone doesn't.). To me, a good review and people who trust me is more satisfying than some cash. If/when I think my service is worth more, I'll charge more. I think that's simpler for everyone involved.

Another way to look at it: We're not waiters and waitresses working at a different (federally-defined) minimum wage that anticipates tips as part of the compensation. It's a competitive market. We set our own rates. (Are plumbers and landscapers tipped?).

When I've been offered a tip, I ask that they donate it to a rescue group, humane society, etc., whenever the next opportunity arises.

Tips are not required but they are appreciated. As to amount, It's completely up to you as to how much you feel our service is worth to you. Rover does take 15-20% out of the fee you pay, so we actually receive 80-85% of what you pay up front, if that makes a difference.

I've received tips in the form of gift cards, candy, and cash, and I've also received nothing. I don't expect a tip, but I don't turn one down either.

Yes, you should tip your sitter! This is no different then any other service based profession. Also they are caring for your dog...many people treat their dog better than their kid! Lol, someone providing that level of service certainly deserves a little extra. A typical tip would be 15-20% for gratitude. A tip shows respect and appreciation for their trustworthy and professional efforts.
